EPFO: The EPFO Member Passbook provides employees with a detailed record of their monthly Provident Fund contributions, including the amounts deposited by the employee and the employer. It also shows the portion allocated towards the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), along with the opening and closing balances.
Understand the EPFO Passbook
The passbook shown in the image covers the financial year 2025–26 and displays monthly contributions from March to August 2026. The entries indicate a monthly PF wage of Rs 15,000. Based on the figures shown, the employee contributes Rs 1,800 per month, equivalent to 12% of the PF wage. The employer’s contribution is divided into two parts: Rs 550 is deposited into the EPF account, while Rs 1,250 is allocated towards the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS).
According to the passbook, the total contributions for the six-month period are Rs 10,800 from the employee, Rs 3,300 from the employer towards EPF, and Rs 7,500 towards EPS. The passbook also records any transfers or withdrawals, if applicable, and displays the closing balances under the respective contribution categories.
It is important to understand that the employee’s contribution goes entirely towards EPF, while the employer’s contribution is split between EPF and EPS, subject to applicable eligibility and contribution rules. The pension contribution is not added to the employee’s regular EPF balance in the same way as the provident fund contribution.
Employees can check their PF deposits, monthly contribution details and account balance through the official EPFO Member Passbook portal. They should regularly verify their entries and contact EPFO if any contribution appears to be missing or incorrect.
