Train Cancelled: As winter sets in across North India, fog starts to reveal its full impact, especially on the railways. Nowadays, nearly every family organizes their travel plans around train journeys. But fog throws a wrench in those plans. With visibility dropping, trains have to slow down.
Platforms get packed, and travel times can balloon. A usual 15-hour trip can turn into a 20-hour ordeal in winter. With heavy fog expected this season, the Railways has opted to cancel 56 major trains. Make sure to check if your train is one of them.
How long will these cancellations last?
According to the Railways, due to the likelihood of thick fog, they have decided to cancel 56 trains on key routes from December 1, 2025, to March 1, 2026. This is a precaution to prevent any risks associated with low visibility and to avoid potential accidents that could arise from delays at night.
Passengers on the Punjab route will feel the brunt of this. Officials have stated that advance bookings for these trains have already been halted, and all station masters have been notified. The cancellation status has been updated in the reservation system to prevent any last-minute hassles for travelers.
Which routes will be impacted?
Railway officials mention that this entire initiative is part of a winter readiness strategy. Visibility can drop so drastically in winter that operating long-distance trains becomes risky. During these periods, trains often halt, face lengthy delays, and overall operations slow down. This decision will also affect major stations in Punjab like Chandigarh, Jalandhar, and Ludhiana. Daily commuters and those heading to Jammu and Vaishno Devi might encounter some challenges during these months.
