Tomato Price Hike: Major news for common people. For the past few days, the prices of tomatoes have suddenly started soaring again in the market. Till a month ago, tomatoes used to find a place in every household plate, but now people are getting perplexed by its price. Due to rain and changing weather, the supply has been disrupted and this has directly affected the pockets of common consumers.

In many cities, the prices have even doubled, due to which the kitchen expenses have increased. From major producing states like Maharashtra to big markets like Delhi, the prices of tomatoes are increasing everywhere. On top of that, increased demand during the wedding season has pushed prices even higher. Currently, people are making do with just the small purchases they need, hoping the market returns to normal in the coming days.

Retail prices and state-wise status

According to data from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, the average retail price of tomatoes across India increased from Rs 36 to Rs 46 per kg between October 19 and November 19. Chandigarh saw a 112% increase, while Karnataka, Himachal, and Andhra Pradesh saw monthly increases of more than 40%. In some places, good quality tomatoes are selling for up to Rs 80 per kg.

The wedding and festive season boosted demand, but heavy rains severely impacted supply. The number of trucks arriving at Delhi’s Azadpur Mandi from Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat halved. Farmers’ crops were damaged by the rain, further exacerbating the supply crisis.

Impact on inflation

Last month, falling prices of tomatoes, onions, and potatoes kept retail inflation at just 0.25%, the lowest since 2013. But now, supply disruptions have caused inflation to rise again. Experts believe the impact on consumers’ pockets will soon be felt.

Market and future situation

If the weather does not improve, it will take time for crop supplies to return to normal, and prices may remain elevated. Demand will remain strong due to weddings and festivals. The government is monitoring the situation and may intervene if necessary.
