The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) has been launched keeping in mind the health, nutrition, and financial stability of pregnant women. It is often observed that pregnant women require extra care and rest, but due to financial constraints, they are sometimes unable to access necessary facilities and check-ups on time. To address this problem, the government launched the Matru Vandana Yojana so that every pregnant woman can ensure a safe delivery and better nutrition.

What is the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana?
The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana provides direct financial assistance to women who are first-time mothers. Under this scheme, a total amount of ₹5000 is given in three different instalments, so that health facilities can be availed on time from the early stages of fetal development until delivery. If the woman gives birth to a girl child for the second time, the government provides an additional ₹6000. In this way, eligible women can receive a maximum benefit of up to ₹11,000.
The objective of the scheme is to encourage pregnant women to receive necessary nutrition, rest, vaccinations, and safe delivery in a hospital. It also aims to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.
How can women avail themselves of this scheme?
To avail of this scheme, the woman must be at least 19 years old. The scheme is specifically designed for women who are unable to work due to pregnancy or who face a reduction in income. This includes women from SC, ST, BPL cardholder families, women with disabilities, Ayushman Bharat beneficiaries, e-Shram cardholders, and women from families associated with MNREGA job cards.
