Ration Update: The Delhi government is preparing to completely transform the Ration Distribution system into a high-tech one. Ration card holders will no longer have to stand in long queues to receive their grain subsidies. The government has decided to send the subsidy directly to beneficiaries’ digital wallets linked to their identification. This entire process will be carried out through a Digital Currency (CBDC) issued by the RBI.
Food and Civil Supplies Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced that digital currency will be transferred to beneficiaries through a secure digital wallet system. They can use this amount to purchase grains and essential commodities from Fair Price Shops (FPS). Sharing a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote in the caption, “The ration system will be made more convenient through CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency). Those who apply for it will receive digital currency sent to their phones, which they can use to purchase rations. The government has also increased the income limit for ration cards to 2.5 lakh rupees. The previous limit was so low that many needy people, whose income was based solely on daily wages, were deprived of this facility.”
How will digital currency function in PDS?
CBDC is basically a digital version of the rupee, holding the same legal standing as physical cash. The government will first assess the subsidy amount for the beneficiary and then transfer it straight to a digital wallet. The primary advantage of this system is that it will effectively eliminate malpractices in grain distribution at ration shops. Every transaction will be recorded digitally, allowing anyone to access it at their convenience.
Eligibility and New Changes
In a significant relief for families receiving rations, the government has raised the annual income threshold to Rs 2.5 lakh (Rs 2.5 lakh). Previously, this limit was set at Rs 1.2 lakh (Rs 1.2 lakh). The department has also canceled nearly 200,000 fraudulent cards and is now inviting new applications.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta states that this adjustment will allow millions more needy families to participate in the ration system. The implementation of digital currency and the raised income limit will directly benefit thousands of families in Delhi. This initiative marks a crucial step towards enhancing transparency in government schemes.
