PM Kisan Update: Good news has arrived for farmers who are eagerly anticipating the 23rd installment of the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM Kisan 23rd installment). The central government has made a crucial move to ensure that farmers get a fair price for their crops and are not compelled to sell them at low rates. Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has given the green light for the procurement of chickpea and sunflower at the minimum support price (MSP) amounting to an impressive Rs 4,886 crore.
What does this new decision from the Central Government entail?
As per the Agriculture Ministry, the government has broadened the crop procurement scope under the Price Support Scheme (PSS). The main goal is to shield farmers from market volatility and guarantee them profitable prices. This initiative will lead to the direct purchase of chickpea and sunflower seeds from farmers in Maharashtra and Karnataka at the MSP, ensuring financial security of around Rs 4,886.46 crore for the farmers.
How will the gram farmers in Maharashtra benefit from this?
The Central Government has approved the Maharashtra Government’s request to significantly raise the maximum procurement limit for chickpeas in the state for the Rabi 2025-26 season. A total of 819,882 metric tons of chickpeas will now be procured in the state. The overall MSP value of this decision will surpass Rs 4,816.80 crore, providing direct benefits to farmers in Maharashtra.
Has there been any adjustment in the deadline for selling gram?
Absolutely! To accommodate farmers better, the government has extended the deadline for chickpea purchases in Maharashtra by an additional 30 days. Farmers can now sell their produce at MSP until May 29, 2026, making it easier for those who were unable to sell their crops within the previous timeframe. This decision serves as a crucial support for farmers who might have faced challenges in selling their chickpeas due to market pressures.
What is the good news for sunflower growers in Karnataka?
Along with Maharashtra, the central government has also approved a proposal from the Karnataka government. The purchase of 9,023 metric tons of sunflower seeds at the MSP has been approved in Karnataka for the Rabi 2026 season. A budget of over Rs 69.66 crore has been allocated for this purpose. This move will ensure that sunflower farmers in Karnataka receive a fair and remunerative price for their produce.
What impact will this have on the agricultural sector and farmers?
The Ministry clarified that these decisions are proof of the government’s commitment to protecting the economic interests of farmers. These decisions will not only directly benefit farmers in the respective states but also bring stability to the agricultural sector. This significant approval for MSP procurement, just before the upcoming installment of PM Kisan, has further strengthened farmers’ confidence.
