OPS New Update: The government announced in the Legislative Council on Monday that the NPS accounts of employees selected in 2005 will be closed on February 28th. The government stated that only after the NPS accounts are closed will such employees be able to receive the benefits of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). This step was taken to prevent cases where selected employees assumed charge later, and their NPS funds were not deposited into their GPF accounts despite the pension mandate being implemented. This announcement was made by the Uttar Pradesh government.
Employees will receive the benefits of the old pension scheme
It should be noted that during Question Hour, Dr. Mansingh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party (SP) asked when the NPS funds of these employees would be transferred to their GPF accounts so that they could join the OPS. On behalf of the government, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Industrial Development, Jaswant Singh Saini, stated that after February 28th, employees selected in 2005 will begin receiving the benefits of the old pension scheme.
OPS option instead of NPS
This issue had previously been raised in the Legislative Council in December 2025. The bench then reviewed the Secondary Education Department’s orders that denied OPS benefits to eligible employees. Teachers’ group leader Dhruv Kumar Tripathi stated that employees selected before March 28, 2005, were provided the option to be covered under OPS instead of NPS. Despite this, the department acted arbitrarily in granting benefits to subject matter experts appointed since 2002. Consequently, Chairman Kunwar Manvendra Singh directed the matter be resolved within a month.
Demand for Restoration of Pension Schemes in UP
The demand for restoration of the old pension scheme has been ongoing for a long time among employees appointed after 2005 in Uttar Pradesh. Earlier this month, the Uttar Pradesh Class IV State Employees Federation demonstrated in Ballia by flying kites with the words “OPS” written on them and took out a rally to TD College Square. The employees announced that the agitation would continue until their demands were met.
