According to the new rules issued by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, rail passengers are in for a major shock. Under the previous railway regulations, passengers were entitled to a partial refund if they cancelled their tickets up to 4 hours before the train’s scheduled departure; however, this time limit has now been extended to 8 hours.

Cancel Your Ticket Within 8 Hours

According to the railway rules, if your train is scheduled to depart at 6:00 PM, you must make a decision regarding your ticket by 10:00 AM—without fail. If you cancel your ticket just 7 or 5 hours before the train’s departure, the Railways reserves the right to provide you with absolutely no refund.

Furthermore—regardless of whether you have booked a First AC ticket or a Sleeper Class ticket—cancelling within the 8-hour window means forfeiting your entire fare amount. Additionally, the Railways have completely overhauled the refund structure itself. The actual amount of money you receive back will now depend entirely on how far in advance of the train’s departure you choose to cancel your ticket.

When Will You Receive a 100% Refund?

According to Indian Railways’ regulations, if you cancel your ticket 3 days or 72 hours before your scheduled journey, you will be granted a 100% refund. However, the standard cancellation charges (such as the fixed fees of ₹60 or ₹120) that were applicable previously will still be deducted. Between 24 and 72 Hours: If you cancel your ticket between 1 and 3 days prior to the train’s departure, you will be eligible to receive a 75% refund.

In this scenario, the Railways will deduct 25% of your total fare amount. If you cancel your ticket between 8 and 24 hours before departure, you will be granted a refund of only 50%. The remaining half of the amount will be credited to the railway’s account. If you cancel your ticket less than eight hours before departure, you should abandon any hope of receiving a refund.

Why the Rule Was Changed

Indian Railways has revised its rules. The rationale behind this move is that last-minute cancellations often result in seats remaining vacant. This causes a disadvantage to passengers who are on the waiting list. By setting an eight-hour window, the railways will have more time to allocate seats to waiting-list passengers. However, for the common man, this rule is undoubtedly somewhat strict.
