Toll Plaza News

New Toll Rules 2026: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a significant update regarding toll payments nationwide. Starting April 1, 2026, cash will be entirely eliminated at all national highway toll plazas. Toll payments will now be processed through digital methods such as FASTag or UPI. This government initiative aims to transition the toll system to a fully digital format, minimizing long queues at toll plazas and enhancing travel convenience. Let’s delve into the changes, including UPI payment options at toll plazas.

New Digital Toll Rules 2026

As per NHAI, cash will no longer be accepted at any lane across roughly 1, 150 toll plazas throughout the country. This modification is intended to facilitate smooth traffic flow. Drivers will now need to pay toll fees using FASTag or UPI (by scanning a QR code). This will cut down the waiting time at toll booths to merely 3 seconds. If a vehicle enters a toll lane without a valid FASTag, cash payment will not be an option. In such instances, a fine of 1.25 times the toll fee will be charged via UPI scanning. Previously, this penalty was double the cash amount. Digital payments will enhance transparency in toll collection, enable quicker vehicle passage through tolls, conserve fuel, and lower pollution levels.

FASTag annual pass

With the commencement of the new financial year, the government has updated the FASTag annual pass fee. This is excellent news for frequent travelers looking to avoid the inconvenience of regular recharges. For the financial year 2026-27, the FASTag annual pass fee has been raised from Rs 3, 000 to Rs 3, 075. This adjustment has been implemented under the Ministry’s new regulations. This updated rate applies solely to private vehicles equipped with a valid FASTag. This service will be accessible at around 1, 150 toll plazas nationwide. Currently, over 5.6 million private vehicle owners are benefiting from this service, reinforcing the vision of Digital India on our roads.

Check KYC of FASTag

Cash payments at toll plazas have been completely discontinued, so even the slightest carelessness can cause problems during your highway journey. Therefore, it’s crucial to keep a few important things in mind before embarking on your journey. Before leaving home, make sure your FASTag has sufficient balance and that its KYC is fully updated. If your KYC isn’t updated, your FASTag may be blacklisted, causing significant disruption to your travel.
