New Labour Code: Big news for everyone. The new labor codes officially took effect on May 9th. The government has announced the new regulations. As a result, all provisions of the four new labor codes are now fully in place. This has led to the elimination of 29 separate rules. The primary goal of the new labor codes is to safeguard employee interests. Additionally, the rules have been simplified for businesses.

Originally, the four new labor codes were set to take effect on November 21, 2025. However, some were not fully enacted due to the absence of detailed regulations. This issue has now been resolved. All four new labor codes and their related regulations are now fully in effect. The government has informed the public of the new rules after consulting with various stakeholders.

States will need to separately announce their regulations concerning the new labor codes

An official stated that the new labor codes, along with their complete framework, have come into full effect following the publication of the new rules in the Gazette. However, states will need to notify their own regulations related to these codes, which may take some time.

The 29 old labor laws have now been completely abolished

Experts indicate that the full implementation of the new labor codes marks the completion of significant labor reforms. The government has enacted four labor codes, replacing 29 outdated regulations. This change will have a broad impact, making things easier for both employees and businesses. The ease of doing business is expected to improve, and social security coverage for employees will also expand.

Prohibition of employees or workers from exceeding 48 hours of work per week

Many aspects will change for workers, especially those concerning their rights, safety, and compensation. The most notable change pertains to working hours. The new regulations state that working hours cannot surpass 48 hours per week. This will create consistency in working hours across various sectors.

Every employee and worker will have a minimum of one day off each week.

Employees will get at least one day of rest weekly. If they work overtime, they will earn extra pay. At present, many industries require employees to remain in the office past standard hours. This applies to workers as well. Unfortunately, they do not receive payment for the additional hours they put in.

Once the new labor codes are fully implemented, it will be compulsory for employers to issue appointment letters to every worker. This change will enhance transparency in the employer-employee relationship. It will become harder to exploit employees, as no employer will be able to hire a worker without clearly defined terms and conditions.

Employees aged 40 and above will receive complimentary health checkups at least once a year from the company. Female employees can work any shift. However, employers must strictly follow safety regulations. Changes to salary structures have already been put into effect. An employee’s basic salary must constitute at least 50% of their CTC.
