The Ministry of Women and Child Development’s Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a crucial social security scheme for pregnant and lactating women in the country. The objective of this innovative scheme is not only to provide financial assistance, but also to improve the health of both mother and child, and to promote a positive attitude towards daughters in society. Under this scheme, women from economically weaker and backward classes receive a direct benefit transfer of up to ₹6,000 into their bank accounts.

How much financial assistance will be provided, and how will it be paid

Financial assistance under the PMMVY scheme is divided into three distinct phases to ensure proper care for the mother and child, from pregnancy to immunization.

Support for the first child

₹3,000 is provided for pregnancy registration and one ANC visit. A second installment of ₹2,000 is received upon birth registration and completion of vaccinations up to 14 weeks. This provides a total direct benefit of ₹5,000. Additionally, additional incentives are also available under the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) for institutional delivery, bringing the total benefit to an average of ₹6,000.

Special Assistance for the Second Child (if it is a girl)

To improve the sex ratio and encourage girls, a large lump sum of ₹6,000 is given upon birth if the second child is a girl. This special incentive reflects the government’s importance to daughters.
