Indian Railways boasts the fourth largest railway network globally and possesses a rich cultural and historical significance. Each day, approximately 13,000 trains carry around 40 million passengers to various destinations. To secure a seat, travelers must book their tickets up to four months in advance. For those unable to obtain a confirmed ticket, the railway offers a Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) ticket, which allows for travel, albeit with some limitations.
Amenities a passenger can claim through a RAC ticket
It is noteworthy that passengers holding RAC tickets are entitled to several amenities, which railway staff are obligated to provide. According to Indian Railways regulations, a passenger with an RAC ticket is allocated half of a seat, while the other half is reserved for another traveler. Although this arrangement does not permit sleeping, it allows for seated travel. The specific seat number can be identified using the PNR number. Passengers may coordinate with their co-travelers to alternate sleeping arrangements during the journey.
Additionally, those with RAC tickets receive a bedroll kit, which includes a sheet and blanket, provided by the railway. Passengers traveling in AC first, second, or third class are guaranteed a bedroll, and if it is not available at their seat, they can request one from the coach attendant. However, this service is not extended to AC chair car passengers.
Railway officials have confirmed that passengers with RAC tickets are also entitled to meal services on the train, available to those in AC first and second class. Both confirmed ticket holders and RAC passengers receive food at their seats. Furthermore, if a passenger with a RAC ticket has ample time before their train’s arrival, they are permitted to wait in the railway waiting hall.
