If you want to know whether your PAN card is active or not, you don’t need to go anywhere. The Income Tax Department has provided an online facility through which you can check the status of your PAN card from the comfort of your home using your mobile or computer.

How to check PAN Card status from home
To check the status of your PAN card, first, you need to visit the official website of the Income Tax Department. After the website opens, you will see a section related to Quick Links on the homepage. Here you will find the “Verify PAN Status” option, which you need to click.
After this, a new page will open where you will be asked for information such as your PAN number, name as per PAN, date of birth, and registered mobile number. After filling in all the details correctly, click on the “Continue” option.
Now, you will receive an OTP on the mobile number linked to your PAN card. After entering the OTP and validating it, the status of your PAN card will be displayed on the screen. If your PAN card is properly active, the message “PAN is Active, and Details are as per PAN” will appear on the screen.

What do the letters on the PAN card mean?
The 10-digit alphanumeric code written on the PAN card is not just a number; it contains your personal information. The first three letters can be any combination of the English alphabet, which are determined by the system.
The fourth letter indicates the category of the cardholder. For example, P is used for an individual, C for a company, T for a trust, and F for a firm. The fifth letter is the first letter of your surname. The following four digits are a sequence number, and the last character is a check code that ensures the validity of the PAN number. In this way, every PAN card is unique and does not match that of any other person.
