News of train or flight accidents comes out from time to time. Whether it is bad weather, sudden rail accidents, or any other unexpected situation, the financial safety of passengers has become very important. In this situation, the OTIS (Optional Travel Insurance Scheme) offered by IRCTC is very helpful. For only 45 paise, travellers can get insurance cover of up to ₹10 lakh, which gives financial support during the journey.

OTIS is an optional scheme started by Indian Railways. It is available for confirmed and RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) passengers. While booking a ticket on the IRCTC website or app, passengers can choose whether they want this insurance or not. Since the premium is only 45 paise (including tax), it is affordable for everyone. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also said earlier that in the last five years, insurance companies have settled 333 claims and paid a total compensation of ₹27.22 crore.

What is Covered Under the OTIS Scheme?

  • In case of death: ₹10 lakh
  • Permanent total disability: ₹10 lakh
  • Permanent partial disability: Up to ₹7.5 lakh
  • Hospitalisation due to injury: Up to ₹2 lakh
  • Cost of transporting the body: ₹10,000

How to Get the Benefits

Passengers must book their tickets online through IRCTC. While booking, they need to tick the insurance checkbox. The premium is added automatically to the final ticket price.

After booking, the insurance company sends a link to the passenger’s mobile number and email. Through this link, the passenger must enter the nominee details. These details are needed for any future claims.

Claim Process

If an accident happens, the passenger or nominee must contact the insurance company directly. IRCTC is not involved in the claim process. All the steps are handled between the insured person and the insurance company.

Important Terms

Passengers who book tickets from the counter, waiting-list passengers, children below 5 years, and foreign tourists are not covered under this scheme.

OTIS Travel Insurance gives financial support during travel and helps families in case of an accident. With a very small premium and wide coverage, it has become an important benefit for today’s travellers. It gives both financial and mental security.
