Another inflation shock for the people of Karnataka! The state government has increased the sales tax on diesel from 18.4% to 21.17% from April 1. This unexpected increase has led to a hike in diesel prices by ₹ 2 to ₹ 2.75 per liter. Even though the state government is claiming that diesel prices in Karnataka are still the lowest in South India, this increase will have a direct impact on the pocket of the common man.

Currently, the price of diesel in Karnataka is ₹ 88.99 per liter and the price of petrol is ₹ 102.92 per liter. So let’s know what impact this price hike will have on the common man and the economy.

Diesel becoming expensive will increase the prices of essential commodities
This increase in diesel prices will have a direct impact on transportation costs. The operation of trucks, buses, taxis and other public vehicles will become expensive, due to which the prices of essential commodities and food items may increase.
The common people, who are already struggling with inflation, will now have to face a double blow. Due to the increase in transportation costs, daily necessities like fruits, vegetables and grains will also become expensive, which will affect the budget of every section.
From house tax to electricity bills, milk prices are also skyrocketing
Recently, the Bangalore Municipal Corporation (BBMP) has started levying garbage management tax along with house tax on houses. Apart from this, bus fares have been increased by a whopping 15% and metro fares by 71%. The price of milk has also increased by ₹ 4 per liter, and electricity bills are also increasing continuously. There will also be a gradual increase in the fixed charge of electricity in the coming years, which will increase to ₹ 25 in 2025-26, ₹ 30 in 2026-27 and ₹ 40 in 2027-28. These constantly increasing expenses have broken the back of the common man.
The general public and the opposition are criticizing

The Congress government in Karnataka is facing severe criticism from the opposition and the general public over the ever-increasing prices. Opposition parties say that the government is making the lives of the common people more difficult by burdening them with additional taxes. People say that on the one hand the government promises welfare schemes, on the other hand it is weakening their economic condition by continuously increasing inflation. The government now needs to take such steps so that the common man can get some relief.
