FASTag- New Toll Rules from April 1,Check New Rules

Annual Fastag Pass

FASTag Update: Exciting news for travelers using national highways and expressways across the nation! Starting tomorrow,April 1st,the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will completely remove cash payments at toll plazas. From now on,all vehicles passing through these tolls will need to pay using digital methods only. This initiative aims to enhance transparency in toll collection, improve traffic flow, and save time for travelers.

Cash lanes will be a thing of the past

As per the new NHAI guidelines, cash counters will no longer be available at toll plazas. Every lane has been transformed into a digital lane. Commuters will have two main options for toll payment—FASTag and UPI (QR code). The authority is confident that this change will help reduce the long lines at toll plazas. Data shows that the introduction of FASTag has cut the average waiting time from 8 minutes down to just 47 seconds, with a goal to bring it even closer to zero.

Those without FASTag will face fines and have the option of UPI. According to the new rules,if a vehicle enters the toll lane without an active FASTag or with insufficient balance,it could face a significant fine. Currently, double the toll amount is charged in such cases. However, for emergencies,NHAI has made UPI-based QR codes available at the booths, allowing passengers to make payments via their smartphones. Officials have warned that UPI payments might experience delays due to network issues,so using FASTag is recommended.

Environmental and Economic Benefits

Experts indicate that transitioning to 100% digital payments will not only decrease fuel consumption but also significantly lower carbon emissions caused by vehicle stops. Additionally, reducing human involvement will help eliminate discrepancies in toll collection.

Important advice for travelers

Update KYC: Ensure that your FASTag KYC is complete before you leave for your journey, else the tag may get blacklisted.
Check balance: Check your balance through your bank or wallet app.
Keep a backup: Keep an active UPI app (like Google Pay or PhonePe) ready on your phone.
This change is a revolutionary step towards India’s digital infrastructure, which will make highway travel more modern and faster.
