As digital transactions increase in the country, so too are instances of cyber fraud. Now, the Income Tax Department has issued a special warning to protect taxpayers, especially senior citizens. Recently, it has been observed that fraudsters are attempting to trap people by creating fake emails, SMS messages, and websites in the name of the Income Tax Department.
In this situation, taxpayers have been advised to be extremely cautious.
Fraudsters’ New Tactics and What Taxpayers Should Do
Fake messages and emails with the Income Tax Department’s logo and name are currently circulating rapidly due to increased online activity by cybercriminals. The email or message generally relates to large amounts of money or time-sensitive notice for magistrates. Clicking the links may allow hackers to steal highly confidential information like user’s PAN number, password, and OTP (one-time password) through phishing.
The department has clearly stated that taxpayers should only use the official portal https://www.incometax.gov.in. They should avoid any other websites that look similar to the official website (such as those with spelling mistakes or other domains containing words like ‘efiling’).
Helpline and Contact Information for Security
Taxpayers are instructed to report any suspicious emails or messages immediately. The Income Tax Department never asks for your password or OTP via email or SMS. Therefore, be cautious if you receive any such requests. Use the following channels to report suspicious activity and for assistance:
| Department / Service | Contact Information |
|---|
| Report Phishing Emails | [email protected] |
| Cyber Security Agency (CERT-In) | [email protected] |
| Helpdesk Number | 1800 103 0025 |
Awareness is the only protection
The main objective of this government campaign is to raise awareness among the general public about cybersecurity. Senior citizens, in particular, who are not very tech-savvy, often fall victim to such scams. The Income Tax Department’s slogan is – “Think before you click – Be tax smart, stay safe.”
Warn the elderly members of your family and acquaintances about this. Before clicking on any link, carefully verify the sender’s email ID and the website name. A little carelessness can lead to significant financial losses. So, always be vigilant and stay safe.
