Under the scheme, the government is providing beneficiaries with improved breeds of pigs for pig farming, enabling higher productivity and better income in a shorter time. The scheme provides a subsidy of up to 90 percent of the total cost for setting up a unit of two female and one male pig, making it highly accessible for economically weaker sections of society.
According to the standards set by the government, the estimated price of a female pig is Rs. 6,000 and that of a male pig is Rs. 7,500. Thus, the total cost for two female and one male pig is Rs. 19,500. An additional 8 percent, or Rs. 1,560, is added as insurance. The total cost of the entire unit comes to Rs. 21,060, of which the beneficiary has to contribute only Rs. 2,106.
Interested individuals from the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities can apply offline for the Pig Development Scheme at their respective district’s Animal Husbandry Department. At the time of application, it is mandatory to submit a passport-size photograph, identity proof, residence certificate, caste certificate, Aadhaar card, and a photocopy of the bank passbook. Beneficiaries will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.
Selected beneficiaries under the scheme will also receive one day of training to enable them to practice scientific pig farming. The government has allocated Rs. 300 per beneficiary for this training. Improved breeds of pigs such as White Yorkshire, Landrace, Tamworth, T&D, and Jharsuk are being provided under this scheme.
In Gaya district, the target is to benefit more than two dozen beneficiaries under this scheme. According to Dr. Sunil Kumar Rai, the District Animal Husbandry Officer of Gaya, these improved breeds of pigs have a very high reproductive capacity. A female pig gives birth to 12 to 14 piglets every six months, meaning that approximately 48 to 50 piglets can be obtained from two female pigs in a year.
These pigs also have a rapid growth rate, reaching a weight of 80 to 100 kilograms within a year. The average market price for a pig is between 10,000 and 12,000 rupees. Based on this, farmers can earn more than 500,000 rupees annually by selling 48 to 50 pigs.
