The Central Government has implemented numerous schemes to support and uplift the poor and workers. In an effort to encash, and support them financially, the government proposed the E-Shram Card Scheme, which allows a worker in the unorganised sector to register themselves.
As of December 2022, more than 28 crore workers have registered themselves in the E-Shram portal of the Government of India. After the registration, the workers can avail of benefits under various government schemes.
Free Insurance
The government provides free insurance of ₹2 lakh for accident for registered workers of the E-Shram portal, provided under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY). There is no premium to pay for this insurance.
If an accidental death or full disability takes place for a registered worker, the worker’s family would get ₹2 lakh. If there is a partial disability to the worker, the worker would get ₹1 lakh.
Aadhaar Card Required for E-Shram Registration
To register on the E-Shram portal, you must have an Aadhaar card. Your mobile number should be linked to your Aadhaar. You also need an active bank account.
If your mobile number is not linked with Aadhaar, you can visit the nearest CSC center and register through biometric verification. You can also update your Aadhaar by linking your mobile number.
Who Can and Cannot Get the Benefits
The Ministry of Labour and Employment aims to link 38 crore unorganized workers with the E-Shram scheme. The goal is to connect them to government social security schemes.
However, if someone is already getting benefits from a government pension scheme, they will not be eligible for the E-Shram scheme. Similarly, Pradhan Mantri Kisan Yojana beneficiaries cannot get money under this scheme.
Any unorganized worker between 16 to 59 years can register on the E-Shram portal.
Workers from the unorganized sector include shopkeepers, helpers, auto drivers, rickshaw pullers, dairy workers, delivery boys (Zomato, Swiggy, Amazon, Flipkart), paper sellers, brick kiln workers, and others. After successful registration, a 10-digit E-Shram card is issued.
