What is an e-Passport?
The e-Passport looks exactly like the old passport, but its true power lies in the microchip embedded in its cover. This chip acts as an advanced digital storage system that stores the passport holder’s identity, passport information, and biometric records. This information is exactly the same as printed on the passport, making tampering or counterfeiting virtually impossible.
How to Identify an e-Passport
The new passport has a special golden electronic passport symbol on its cover. This indicates that the passport contains a microchip and is electronically readable.
Who Can Apply?
Every Indian citizen eligible for a regular passport can also apply for an e-Passport. The government has initially implemented it at select Passport Seva Kendras and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras across the country. Before applying, it is important to check whether this facility is available at the Passport Seva Kendra in your city.
Application Process
The application process for an e-Passport is the same as for a regular passport. You must register on the Passport Seva Portal, fill out the online application form, pay the prescribed fee, and then appear for an appointment at the nearest Passport Kendra. During the appointment, biometric verification and a new photograph are taken.
Why is the e-Passport Special?
The immigration process will now be faster than ever because the data will be instantly scanned through the chip, eliminating the need for passengers to spend much time in queues. Furthermore, it protects against identity theft, fake passports, and document tampering. Many developed countries around the world are already implementing this system, and now India has also become a part of this digital revolution.
The Future
In the future, the government is preparing to expand this facility to all Passport Seva Kendras. This will not only make the passport process completely digital and secure, but will also strengthen the global credibility of the Indian passport.
