In some states, such as Rajasthan, copper or brass jewelry is being sold as real gold by affixing fake hallmarks. This is often done with the help of fake hallmarking centers. This raises the question of how to distinguish between real and fake gold. If you ‘re unsure about the purity of gold before or after purchasing it, worry no more. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has developed a useful BIS Care app for this purpose. This app is available for free on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. Launched in 2020, this app allows consumers to check the purity of their gold from the comfort of their homes. All you need is the HUID (Hallmark Unique ID) number printed on the jewelry.
If you encounter a fake hallmark, fake gold certificate, or poor quality gold, you can also file a complaint through the same app. Report the fake product or incorrect marking by going to the Register Complaint section. You can also upload photos or other evidence with your complaint. Once your complaint is filed, you will receive a reference number and updates via SMS or email. In this way, the BIS Care app has become every buyer’s safety net, protecting you from fraud and making your Dhanteras truly golden.
How to check the purity of your jewellery:
• Download the BIS Care app and log in by entering your name, mobile number and email ID.
• Now select the Verify HUID option.
• Enter the HUID number printed on the jewelry.
The information will appear on your screen immediately.
• Jeweller’s name
• Address of Hallmarking Centre
• AHC Registration Number
• Purity of gold
• Hallmarking date
• By combining these details, you can immediately determine whether the gold is real or fake.
