During this period, the women observing fast ( vrati ) observe a waterless fast for about 36 hours , during which they do not consume even a drop of water. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta declared October 27 a public holiday for the Chhath festival. She said this day is important for offering prayers to the setting sun. The Chief Minister extended her best wishes to devotees and said the government has made appropriate arrangements at the Chhath ghats. To mark Chhath Puja, the Bihar Education Department has declared a holiday for schools.
