FASTag New Update: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken an important and relieving decision for common vehicle owners. The authority has announced that the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process, which is currently applicable to new FASTags issued for cars, jeeps, and vans, will be discontinued from February 1, 2026. This decision aims to eliminate technical complexities and unnecessary hassles associated with FASTag.

Problems Caused by the KYV Process

According to NHAI, a large number of vehicle owners were facing difficulties due to the KYV process after their FASTags were issued. Despite having valid documents, in many cases, FASTags would become inactive or face payment issues at toll plazas. This caused mental and financial inconvenience to ordinary citizens.

Relief for Existing FASTag Users

The authority has also clarified that existing FASTags for cars will no longer require regular KYV verification. If there are no complaints related to the FASTag, the user will not need to go through the KYV process again.

Cases Where KYV Will Still Be Required

However, KYV has not been eliminated. In special cases, such as when a FASTag is issued incorrectly, the tag is loose, is being used on another vehicle, or there is a complaint of misuse, KYV will remain mandatory.

Pre-Activation Verification to be Strengthened

Along with removing the KYV process, NHAI has also strengthened the pre-activation validation system for banks issuing FASTags. Now, mandatory verification of the vehicle will be done through the VAHAN portal before activating the FASTag, preventing any kind of discrepancy in the future.

What Was Required Before

Until now, under the KYV process, vehicle owners had to upload their vehicle’s registration certificate and a photo of the vehicle. This process had to be repeated every three years and was necessary to keep the FASTag active. With the new decision, ordinary car owners will be completely relieved of this hassle. Steps taken to simplify the FASTag system

The NHAI says this decision is a major improvement towards making the FASTag system simpler, more transparent, and user-friendly. This will not only streamline the toll payment process but also increase public trust.
