Indian Railways has made a historic change to its catering policy, under which you will soon see famous brands like KFC, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, and Haldiram’s at more than 1,200 railway stations across the country. Along with station redevelopment, the Railways is also preparing to completely transform food and beverage facilities.
The Arrival of Premium Brand Catering Outlets

Previously, only three types of stalls operated at railway stations: snacks, beverages, tea/milk bars, and juice bars. Now, the Railways has added “Premium Brand Catering Outlets” as a fourth category.
This change will provide clean, reliable, and branded food options to more than 23 million train passengers daily, significantly enhancing their convenience. Modern stations in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad are likely to be the first to benefit from this scheme.
Bidding will be done through e-auction
The Railway Board has made it absolutely clear that premium brand stalls will not be allocated based on nominations under any circumstances. These outlets will now be allocated only through e-auction, ensuring transparency.
Each outlet will have a five-year operational tenure. According to the new policy, outlets can be opened under a single-brand, company-owned, or franchise model, depending on the demand and space available at the station.
No Impact on Reservation Policy
The Railways has also ensured that this change will not negatively impact the existing reservation policy for stall quotas (which reserves quotas for SC, ST, OBC, freedom fighters, and displaced persons). This positive step will ensure quality service while also maintaining social justice.

Evaluating station space and footfall is essential
According to railway officials, there has been a long-standing demand for branded food outlets at many stations. Now, the regional railways will assess the available space at each station, passenger footfall, and how the plan can be most effectively implemented.
They will also develop specific terms and conditions and contracts at their respective stations to ensure the smooth operation of premium outlets. This move is being considered a milestone for the railways in enhancing passenger convenience and modernizing the stations.
