Why will banks be closed on December 22nd?

On Monday, December 22, 2025, all government and private bank branches in Sikkim will remain closed. This is due to the state’s major traditional festival, Losoong or Namsoong. This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm by the Lepcha and Bhutia communities. This festival symbolizes the end of the harvest season and the welcoming of the Sikkimese New Year. Due to this holiday, banks in Sikkim will remain closed continuously from Sunday to Monday.

Long break in several states around Christmas

Banking services will also be affected in the last week of December due to Christmas. On December 24, banks will be closed in Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Mizoram on the occasion of Christmas Eve. On December 25, all bank branches across the country will be closed for Christmas. After this, on December 26, there will be another bank holiday in these three states, resulting in banks remaining closed for four consecutive days.

Fourth Saturday and Sunday will also add to the inconvenience

On December 27, 2025, banks will be closed across the country due to it being the fourth Saturday of the month. The next day, December 28, will be the weekly Sunday holiday. ​​This will further extend the continuous bank holiday period in many places.

Holidays in some states at the end of the month

On December 30, banks will be closed in Meghalaya due to the death anniversary of freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah. On December 31, banking services will not be available in Mizoram and Manipur due to New Year’s Eve and the Imoinu Iratpa festival.

Digital banking will remain operational

Despite the closure of bank branches, customers need not worry. UPI, mobile banking, internet banking, and ATM services will continue to function normally. However, it will be necessary to plan for cash-related transactions, drafts, check clearing, and branch-related services.
