The Assam government has taken a big decision regarding the issuance of Aadhaar cards in the state. The government has announced that new Aadhaar cards will not be issued to citizens above the age of 18 for the next one year. However, this ban will not apply to everyone. Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and tea garden workers will be out of this ban.

Exemption to apply till September

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that people of communities who have not yet been able to get Aadhaar cards will be given the facility to apply till the month of September. After this, the process of making Aadhaar cards for common citizens will be closed and it will be possible only under special circumstances.
DC gets special power
The CM further said that if a person needs an Aadhaar card even after the last date of application has passed, then in that case the District Commissioner (DC) will have the special right to issue Aadhaar. However, this will happen only in very rare cases and for this it will be mandatory for the district administration to study the report of the Special Branch and the Foreigners Tribunal.
The objective is to stop illegal infiltration

The Chief Minister clarified that the main objective of this step is to prevent illegal intruders from obtaining Aadhar cards in the state. He said that citizens coming especially from Bangladesh often use Aadhar cards to falsely claim Indian citizenship. The government intends to completely close this path, so that no illegal foreigner can claim citizenship by getting an Aadhar card made in Assam.

Strict stand of the government
CM Himanta also said that Assam has always emphasized on the security of the borders and tried to keep the intruders out of the state. Now it is time to ensure that the most important document of identity i.e. Aadhar card is not misused under any circumstances.
