NHAI Cashless Toll Plazas 2026: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has dramatically transformed the toll payment system across the country. Cash payments will be completely phased out at all national highway toll plazas, effective April 1, 2026, requiring you to use digital means like FASTag or UPI to complete toll payments. This significant government move is aimed at making toll collection 100% digital and providing magical relief from long queues, ensuring a smooth and seamless journey for your travels.
New Digital Toll Rules 2026

Yes, the NHAI has now clarified that cash will no longer be accepted at any lane of approximately 1, 150 toll plazas across the country, as this dramatic change is designed to ensure smooth and robust traffic flow on the roads. Now, commuters will be required to pay toll fees only through FASTag or UPI (QR code scanning),magically reducing the waiting time at toll booths to just 3 seconds.
If you enter a toll lane without a valid FASTag, you will no longer have the option of paying cash; instead, you will have to scan the QR code and pay 1.25 times the fine via UPI, which was previously double the amount in cash. Digital payments will bring greater transparency to toll collection, allowing vehicles to cross the plaza at a faster pace, leading to significant fuel savings and a significant reduction in pollution.
FASTag Annual Pass 2026-27
With the start of the new financial year, the government has also made a significant revision in the FASTag Annual Pass fee, which is a welcome development for high-income travelers who want to be free from the hassle of frequent recharges. The FASTag annual pass fee for the financial year 2026-27 has been increased from ₹3, 000 to ₹3, 075, as part of the Ministry’s new, robust regulations.
This new, lower rate is applicable only to non-commercial (private) vehicles with a valid FASTag, and the service will be operational at approximately 1, 150 toll plazas across the country. Currently, over 5.6 million private vehicle owners are taking advantage of this powerful and successful feature, fully realizing the vision of Digital India on the roads.

Essential Precautions Before Traveling
With the complete elimination of cash at tolls, even a small negligence on your part can dramatically disrupt a smooth highway journey, so it’s important to keep a few important things in mind. Before leaving home, ensure that your FASTag has sufficient balance and its KYC is completely updated, because without an updated KYC, your tag can get blacklisted magically, causing major disruption in your journey.
Always keep an active UPI app on your mobile as a backup so that if the FASTag fails to scan due to technical or network issues, you can scan the QR code on it and complete the successful payment with magical speed. Officials have warned that there may be a significant delay in payments in areas with a poor network, keeping the FASTag fully recharged will prove to be a successful and wise decision.
