What is America’s new visa guidance?

The US State Department recently issued new guidance. Under this guidance, US embassies around the world have been instructed to identify applicants with medical conditions that could cost thousands of dollars to treat. The government believes that such individuals could put a financial strain on the US healthcare system by immigrating to the US.

Previously, visas were only denied for infectious diseases such as tuberculosis (TB), but now diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer, mental disorders, and respiratory illnesses have also been included in this list.

Preparing for Visa Rejection for Health Reasons

The guidance clarifies that visa officers will now check whether an applicant will be dependent on government assistance or subsidies due to the illness. If they determine that the applicant cannot afford their own medical expenses, the visa may be immediately rejected.

The US administration states that only those who are financially self-sufficient and do not become a burden on the government will be allowed to enter the country. This could directly impact foreign students and workers.

Foreign students and workers will be most affected

This rule applies to all visa categories, including tourist (B-1/B-2), student (F-1), and work visas. However, those applying for permanent residence (green cards) will be most affected.

The US now requires only those who are completely healthy and can afford their own medical expenses to enter the country. Student visa applicants must prove that they have sufficient funds, will not be dependent on the government during their studies, and will leave the country after completing their course.

According to the US, this move is aimed at strengthening both public health and economic security. Treating sick or obese individuals is a significant expense, impacting the government’s health budget. Therefore, physical fitness has now become a primary criterion for visa issuance.
