Misuse of deceased person’s Aadhaar:
According to the government, keeping the Aadhaar number active after the death of the deceased can lead to identity fraud. In such cases, the Aadhaar of the deceased can be used to access bank accounts, SIM cards or misuse government schemes. Due to this risk, it has been considered necessary to deactivate the Aadhaar number of the deceased.
1.34 billion active Aadhaar holders
There are currently about 1.34 billion active Aadhaar holders in the country. Keeping such a large system updated and accurate is a significant challenge. The government said that sometimes deaths are registered in different cities or states, while the address listed on the Aadhaar card is different. This makes it even more important to integrate different databases and deactivate Aadhaar numbers in a timely manner.
The government has also implemented several technological measures to enhance the security of the Aadhaar system. People have been given biometric lock and unlock capabilities, which allow them to lock their fingerprint and iris data and prevent unauthorized access. Additionally, a liveness detection feature has been added for face authentication, ensuring the authenticity of the person present.
To further strengthen security, all institutions have been directed to store encrypted Aadhaar numbers in a data vault. The government has also launched a new Aadhaar app, through which family members can easily report deaths. The government said that this entire exercise is an important step towards keeping the Aadhaar system transparent, secure and reliable.
