From availing the benefits of government schemes to getting admission in schools, opening bank accounts or buying SIM cards, the importance of Aadhaar is immense in all cases.
Aadhaar card has now become mandatory for children as well as adults. However, if you have a child between the ages of 5 and 15 in your house, then there is a very important and comforting news for you. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced a big discount in the biometric update of children.
Parents often have various questions about the process and cost of updating their children’s Aadhaar card. The government has now taken special steps to remove that worry. Let’s know the details about these new rules and deadlines.

Why is it important to update at the age of 5 and 15?
The UIDAI has specified that any child registering for an Aadhaar card before turning five years old doesn’t have their biometric data taken (fingerprints and iris scans). This version of an Aadhaar card is called ‘Bal Aadhaar’. However, as the child continues to grow, both the physical appearance and biometric information will change.
Step 1 (At age 5): When the child reaches age five, the child must update their biometrics for the first time.
Step 2 (At age 15): When the child reaches adolescence (15 years of age), the child’s biometrics must be updated for the second time.
If the child does not complete these updates in a timely manner, they may encounter many problems in the future when trying to obtain Aadhaar-based services or when attempting KYC verification. It is best to complete the updates from 15-17 years old.
Big discount on cost: Completely free service
Earlier, parents had to spend Rs 125 from their pocket for this mandatory biometric update of their children. But for the convenience of the common man, UIDAI has now completely waived this charge. That is, if you update your child’s Aadhaar biometric within the specified time frame, you will not have to pay anything.
This special facility has been launched from October 1, 2025 and will be valid until December 30, 2026. During this one year, you can update your child’s photo, fingerprints, and iris scan completely free of charge.
How Do You Complete the Update?
The biometric update process for kids cannot be completed online, since it requires an in-person visit for verification purposes. In order to update your child’s Biometric, please do the following:
1) Visit Your Local Centre: Bring your child to their nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra (Post Office) location.
2) Make An Appointment: Be sure to schedule your appointment in advance through our website, or just walk in at the time of your visit for a token number.
3) Document Verification & Scanning: When it is time to do so, the Aadhaar Operator will verify that your child’s biographic documentation meets the requirements and will scan their fingerprints and irises into the Biometric Device. They will also take your child’s photograph at this time.
4) When Completed: After the process is complete, an acknowledgment slip/receipt will be generated for you to keep track of your child’s Biometric Update request.
