8th Pay Commission: Will you receive increased salaries, pensions, and arrears in May 2027? Know here

da hike

8th Pay Commission: Central employees and pensioners across the country are awaiting the 8th Pay Commission . The primary question on everyone’s mind is how much their salary or pension will increase and when it will be received. The Pay Commission is working on this matter. Online suggestions were sought from central employees and pensioners,as well as from various related associations and other stakeholders, with the deadline ending on Tuesday,March 31,2026. Several organizations, including the NC-JCM (Staff Side),AIRF,and the All India NPS Employees Federation, have submitted their suggestions.

Now,some important information has emerged for employees and pensioners eagerly awaiting the implementation and important updates of the 8th Pay Commission. The central government has provided information regarding this matter. Following questions raised in Parliament, the Finance Ministry has clarified the proposed changes to salaries, allowances, and pensions,as well as the timeline.

Will we get increased salary and pension in May 2027?

In a written response to questions asked in the Lok Sabha,Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary stated that the central government formally constituted the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC) on November 3,2025. Furthermore,it was agreed that the commission has been given 18 months to submit its recommendations regarding salaries, allowances, and pensions of government employees. Chaudhary said,“The commission will submit its recommendations on various issues such as salaries, allowances, pensions, etc. of central government employees within 18 months of its constitution.”

As you read this, you might wonder: will the recommendations be completed by April 2027,18 months from November 2025,and will the increased salaries and pensions begin to be paid in May 2027? The Minister of State for Finance has also cleared up this confusion.

Long process even after getting recommendations

The Minister of State for Finance has also provided information on the fact that salaries and pensions will not necessarily increase immediately after the Pay Commission submits its recommendations. He stated that the financial impact of these recommendations will only be known once they are presented by the 8th Pay Commission and accepted by the government. This means that he clarified that the 18-month deadline is only for submitting recommendations. The Commission will submit these recommendations, and only after the government accepts them will employees and pensioners receive the increased salaries and pensions.

When will the salary hike be implemented?

According to the latest update, the revised pay scales are expected to be implemented from January 1,2026. However, the final decision will depend on when the report is submitted and accepted. India Today quoted CA Manish Mishra, founder of GenZCFO,as saying that while the 8th Pay Commission is said to be effective from January 1,2026,in practice, the increased salaries will likely reach employees’ bank accounts only by the end of 2026 or during the financial year 2026-27,as was the delay seen with previous pay commissions. Furthermore, government employees are likely to receive arrears. This means that the revised pay can be calculated from January 1,2026,as this is when the 7th Pay Commission cycle ended.

Currently, there’s no official word on the exact salary hike. India Today quoted Pratik Vaidya,MD of Karma Management Global Consulting Solutions,as saying,“Two factors help guide expectations: the performance of previous commissions and the current economy. The 6th Pay Commission provided an average increase of around 40%,while the overall impact of the 7th Pay Commission on salaries and allowances is often estimated to be around 23-25%,with a uniform fitment factor of 2.57.”
