8th Pay Commission: Who is Ranjana Prakash Desai, the chairperson of the 8th Pay Commission?

8th Pay Commission: The Government of India has given a major gift to central government employees by approving the formation of the 8th Pay Commission. The pay scales and allowances of central government employees will be increased based on the recommendations of this Pay Commission. Furthermore, state government employees are also looking forward to future pay increases based on this Pay Commission.

Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai has been appointed as the chairperson of the commission. She is a former Supreme Court Justice and has also headed the Delimitation Commission. The Gujarat government also hired her services. She was appointed chairperson of the committee that made recommendations for implementing the Uniform Civil Code.

She retired as a Supreme Court judge in 2014, but has remained active in various roles since. After retirement, she served as Chairperson of the Electricity Appellate Tribunal. She also chaired the Delimitation Commission, and under her guidance, the reorganization of seats in Jammu and Kashmir took place. Under her chairmanship, seven new seats were created, increasing the total number of seats in Jammu and Kashmir to 90. Furthermore, she also chaired the Lokpal Selection Committee.

Apart from Ranjana Prakash Desai, two other members have been appointed to the Pay Commission. Professor Pulak Ghosh of IIM Bangalore will serve as its member. Pankaj Jain, Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum, has been appointed as Member-Secretary. He has extensive administrative experience. Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai was born on October 30, 1949. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Elphinstone College in 1970 and a Bachelor of Laws degree from Government Law College, Bombay in 1973.

Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai joined the legal profession on July 30, 1973, serving as Justice Pratap’s junior when he was at the bar. There, she had the opportunity to appear in numerous civil and criminal cases. She also worked with her father, S.G. Samant, a renowned criminal lawyer. In 1979, she was appointed Public Prosecutor.
