8th Pay Commission– Big news for government employees. The central government had announced the formation of the 8th Pay Commission in January 2025. Seven months have passed since then, but the structure of the commission is still incomplete. Neither its members and chairman have been appointed nor the terms of reference (TOR) have been finalized.

This delay has troubled lakhs of government employees and pensioners and they are asking when the pay commission will be implemented and when will they get the benefit of salary hike.

When will the notification be issued?

Due to this delay, the restlessness of government employees and pensioners is increasing continuously. Employee organizations and unions have written a letter to the Center demanding the formation of the commission and clarity on the TOR. The Finance Ministry has already said that it has sought suggestions from ministries, states and employee organizations. A notification will be issued after the TOR is prepared on the basis of these suggestions. If we closely look at the process of formation of 7th Pay Commission and implementation of its recommendations, it took almost 3 years.

The 7th Pay Commission was announced on 25 September 2013.

Its TOR was released on 28 February 2014,

Members appointed on 4 March 2014

The Commission submitted its report on 19 November 2015.

After this the government implemented the recommendations on 29 June 2016.

That is, the whole process took about 44 months. On this basis, it is being estimated that the 8th Pay Commission can also be implemented by the end of 2027 or early 2028. At present, employees may have to wait longer.
