8th Pay Commission: Big news for central government employees. A significant update has been released concerning the 8th Pay Commission. Reports indicate that the commission is contemplating a fitment factor of 2.57, which may lead to a considerable rise in the salaries of central government employees and pensioners. If this proposal gets the green light, around 4.9 million employees and 6.8 million pensioners will reap the benefits.
What is the fitment factor?
The fitment factor serves as a multiplier to calculate an employee’s basic salary. An increase in this factor will elevate the basic pay. This rise will also enhance allowances such as DA and HRA.
How much could the salary increase?
For instance, if an employee’s current basic salary is Rs 18, 000 and a fitment factor of 2.57 is applied, the new salary could be approximately Rs 46, 260. This translates to a potential salary increase of about 30-34%. As with every pay commission, a salary hike is anticipated this time as well, which will also provide relief to retired employees.
When will the new pay commission take effect?
The 8th Pay Commission was established in November 2025 and has been allotted 18 months to present its report. Its recommendations are anticipated by June 2027. However, the effective date is set for January 1, 2026, which may lead to arrears for employees.
What the commission said?
The Commission stated in its official notice that representatives from central government departments, employee unions, institutions, and various organizations have been invited to this meeting. Significantly, all these stakeholders will have the opportunity to present their views directly before the Commission. Issues related to salary increases, allowances, and pensions are expected to be discussed in detail during this meeting.
If you or your organization would like to attend this meeting, a set process has been established. Interested participants must submit their application via email by April 10th. Only those who apply within the deadline will be selected for the meeting. Only then will they be informed of the meeting’s location, time, and other necessary information.
