Mahindra has always had a one-sided dominance in the off-roading and all-wheel drive (AWD) segment in the Indian automobile market. But now, the country’s leading car manufacturer, Tata Motors, is gearing up to change the game.

To strengthen its hold in the market and attract new-age adventure-loving buyers, Tata Motors is launching a fleet of all-wheel drive (AWD) SUVs. The company is adopting a dual strategy, using a ‘dual-motor setup’ for electric vehicles and a ‘mechanical linkage’ for conventional fuel (ICE) vehicles.

Following the success of the Harrier EV AWD, which is already making waves in the market, we bring you complete and exclusive information about the four new AWD vehicles that Tata Motors is launching in the near future.

1.

Tata Motors is preparing to launch the country’s first three-row electric SUV, the Tata Safari EV, around the festive season, Diwali 2026. This large SUV will share its platform, battery pack, and electronic architecture with the Harrier EV. It is being built on the state-of-the-art ‘acti.ev+’ architecture, which will provide excellent legroom and comfort for rear passengers.

The Safari EV will be offered in both 6-seater and 7-seater layouts, with larger 65kWh and 75kWh battery packs. In its most powerful 75kWh variant, customers will get a dual-motor AWD setup, enabling this heavy-duty vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8 seconds. It will also feature multiple electronic terrain modes to tackle rough terrain.

2.

Tata Motors is bringing back one of its most famous and iconic vehicles, the Sierra, in an electric avatar. The Tata Sierra EV will be launched in the Indian market in mid-2026 (likely around July-August). This electric SUV will primarily be offered with two different battery options—55kWh and 65kWh.

While the base model will be front-wheel drive, its higher-specification premium variants will feature a dual-motor AWD setup with a 65kWh battery. It is being built on Tata’s new ‘acti.ev’ platform, which will offer a real-world range of approximately 450 to 500 kilometers on a single charge. Once launched, it will compete directly with the Mahindra BE 6 and Hyundai Creta Electric.

3. Tata Sierra ICE AWD

For those who prefer the sound of a conventional petrol or diesel engine over an electric one, Tata Motors has a great plan. The company has confirmed that an all-wheel drive version of the petrol-powered Tata Sierra ICE will enter the market in early 2027.

This car will be based on the company’s all-new and future-ready ARGOS platform (All-terrain Ready, Omni-Energy, and Geometry Scalable Architecture).

Following the discontinuation of the Tata Hexa in 2020, this will be Tata’s first conventionally powered AWD vehicle. It will be powered by a powerful 1.5-liter turbo petrol engine that generates a maximum power of 160 hp. This engine will be paired with a smooth 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox and a robust mechanical AWD system.

4.

The first electric SUV from Tata Motors’ ambitious and premium sub-brand, Avinya, will debut in India as well as the global market in 2027. The company plans to launch a completely new and luxurious ‘premium dealership network’ to sell vehicles under this brand.

Technologically, the Avinya EV is being built on Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) world-renowned electrified modular platform. This ultra-luxury electric SUV will feature a massive battery pack of approximately 90-100 kWh, supporting superfast charging speeds.

For superior control, a sporty drive, and incredible grip, it will come standard with a high-performance dual-motor AWD setup, making it one of the fastest and most advanced vehicles in its segment.
