SUV Sales: June 2025 saw a shock in the compact SUV segment. While total sales declined, one of the SUVs emerged victorious and was the new best in the segment. Maruti Brezza has succeeded in overtaking best models such as Nexon, XUV 3XO, Venue, and Sonet. Let’s see how it made it to the top.

Brezza Becomes Bestselling SUV

Maruti Suzuki’s Brezza took the number-one spot in June 2025 by selling 14,507 units. This is a 10% growth compared to June 2024. However, when compared to May 2025, it saw a small dip of 6.8%. Still, its performance was enough to beat all other competitors in its segment.

Nexon’s Drop Despite EV Push

Tata Nexon, both ICE and EV variants included, registered 11,602 sales. It is down by 3.85% when compared to previous year. Sales declined by 11% when compared to May 2025 too. Despite having the electric version, Nexon was unable to retain its previous position.

Tata Punch Faces Heavy Drop

Tata Punch and Punch EV saw the biggest dip in sales. From the previous highs, figures plummeted 42% YoY with 10,446 units retailed in June 2025. Even month-on-month, it saw a 20% drop, making it the month’s biggest losers.

Fronx Posts Steady Figures

Maruti’s Fronx gave a mixed performance. In June 2025, it sold 9,815 units. This was a slight 1.31% increase YoY, but compared to May 2025, its sales dropped sharply by 27.75%.

XUV 3XO, Venue, and Sonet Lose Ground

Mahindra XUV 3XO retailed 7,089 units, a 16.6% decrease YoY. Hyundai Venue retailed 6,858 units, a stunning 30.6% decline. Kia Sonet was merely behind with 6,658 units, a decline of 32.1% from last year. These figures quite well illustrate how Brezza maintained its lead.

Other SUV Performances in June

Hyundai Exter sold 5,873 units. Skoda Kylaq could sell 3,196 units with a 35% decline. Toyota Taisor sold 2,408 units with a 24.4% decline YoY. Nissan Magnite performed even more poorly at just 1,313 units with a 37% decline. Kia Syros declined as sharply as 78.5%, while Renault Kiger sold 755 units with a 34.3% decline but demonstrated 37% MoM growth. Maruti Jimny sold a mere 371 units, declining by 45.6% YoY.

Quarterly Snapshot Indicates Minor Decline

During Q2 2025, total sub-4m SUV sales stood at 2,83,476 units, lower by 1.11% than Q2 2024. Brezza topped the quarter with sales of 47,044 units, followed by Nexon with 40,155 units. Tata Punch witnessed the biggest decline at 36%, while newer players like Skoda Kylaq and Kia Syros introduced diversity into the market.

Changing Trends in the SUV Market

The sub-4 meter SUV segment, which was the most sought-after market in India, is now on the cusp of a new round of competition. Maruti and Tata still have an upper hand, while other brands such as Kia, Hyundai, Nissan, and Renault might have to revamp their strategies. The electric vehicle buzz is also impacting the demand for petrol and diesel variants.
