PM Surya Ghar Scheme: If you’re fed up with the intense heat and frequent power outages, there’s an excellent scheme available for you. The central government’s “PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme” is truly a blessing. This initiative aims to alleviate the burden of high electricity bills for everyday people and allows them to produce their own electricity.

Through this scheme, the government offers a significant subsidy for the installation of solar panels on your rooftop, potentially bringing your monthly electricity bill down to zero for up to 300 units. This not only protects you from regular power cuts but also eases the strain of hefty monthly electricity expenses.

Let’s explore how much support the government will extend based on your household’s load and what the installation costs will be.

Understanding the subsidy calculations based on kilowatt

The market price for installing solar panels directly from vendors ranges from ₹60,000 to ₹80,000 per kilowatt. However, by signing up for this scheme, the government greatly alleviates this financial burden:

1 kW setup: Ideal for small homes or families with low energy consumption, where the government offers a fixed subsidy of Rs 30,000.

2 kW setup: This is the most sought-after option for middle-class families, with the government providing direct assistance of Rs 60,000.

3 kW or larger setup: If your home is spacious or you use appliances like ACs and geysers frequently, you can receive a maximum subsidy of Rs 78,000.

It’s important to note that even if you opt for a system larger than 3 kW, such as 5 kW, the maximum subsidy will still be capped at Rs 78,000.

‘Bonus’ for residents of Uttar Pradesh

For those living in Uttar Pradesh, the state government is offering an additional subsidy of Rs 30,000 on top of the Rs 78,000 central assistance. This means that consumers in Uttar Pradesh can enjoy total direct savings of Rs 108,000.

Value for money in 4 years, everything free for the next 20 years!

Here’s the cost and return analysis for a standard 3 kW solar system

Total Estimated Expense: Rs 180000

Central Government Subsidy: Rs 78000

Net investment from your pocket: Rs 108000

You will save a significant amount every month.

A 3 kW solar plant can produce around 250 to 300 units monthly by harnessing sunlight. If the electricity cost in your region is Rs 8 per unit, you can expect to save about Rs 2,200 each month, totaling around Rs 26,400 annually.

Thus, in just 4 years and 1 month, the full investment of Rs 108,000 will be recouped. For residents of Uttar Pradesh, this payback period is only 3 years. Given that these solar panels last for 25 years, after you recover your costs, you will benefit from completely free electricity for the subsequent 20 years.

Here’s a detailed step-by-step guide for installing solar panels on your roof.

This program is exclusively for individuals who possess a permanent roof and have an active electricity connection registered in their name. You can apply from the comfort of your home by following these six steps:

1. Visit the portal: Start by going to the official website www.pmsuryaghar.gov.in. Complete the registration by entering your state, the name of your electricity provider (DISCOM), and your consumer number.

2. Submit Form: Log in using your registered mobile number and fill out the online application form for ‘Rooftop Solar’.

3. Get the plant installed: After receiving approval from your electricity provider, arrange for the installation of the panels at your home by selecting one from the list of approved vendors on the portal.

4. Apply for Net Metering: Once the installation is complete, upload the details provided by the vendor along with photos of the plant on the portal and apply for ‘Net Metering’.

5. Physical Verification: Officials from Discom will conduct a physical inspection of your plant. If everything is in order, the net meter will be installed, and a ‘Commissioning Certificate’ will be issued on the portal.

6. Funds will be credited to your account: Finally, upload your bank passbook or a canceled check to the portal. The complete subsidy amount will be credited to your account within 30 days.

There’s no budget? The government will provide cheap loans without guarantee.

Even if you don’t have a budget of Rs 1 lakh to invest initially, you can still join this scheme. The government, in collaboration with banks, has provided collateral-free loans. The interest rate is very low at around 7%, just 0.5% above the RBI repo rate. This results in a very small monthly EMI, which you can easily repay using the savings on your monthly electricity bill.
