Himalayan Electric: With no official word, a new mystery two-wheeler has emerged in Ladakh’s off-road landscapes, making waves with its high-end construction and dystopian looks. The vehicle is from a company with its heritage and adventure credentials. Caught off guard, this unexpected glimpse suggests something to look out for—particularly for electric bike fans.

Electric bike in Testing

Royal Enfield has gone about testing its long-awaited electric motorcycle, the Himalayan Electric, in a hush-hush manner. The electric off-roader was initially unveiled as the HIM-E prototype at the 2023 EICMA event in Milan. The production-ready version of this electric motorbike has now been spotted at a hotel in Ladakh, where it is said to be undergoing testing with Royal Enfield’s management team. This suggests that the bike is nearer than ever before to going into production.

Adventure-Oriented Design

The Himalayan Electric lacks the front beak carried by its petrol-based siblings but features a high windscreen. LED projector taillights and headlights with the rear indicators contribute to its illumination system. A one-piece seat replicates the fuel tank layout of the HIM-E concept, based on a “function over form” principle of design.

Hardware and Suspension Setup

The bike is fitted on SM Pro Platinum Enduro wheels constructed of billet aluminum and covered with knobby Bridgestone Battlax Adventurecross tires. Braking is done using petal discs with Nissin calipers front and rear. The braking system also features dual brake fluid reservoirs attached to the handlebar. Single test unit was observed using a Renthal braced handlebar with a brace pad.

Dashboard and Controls

A high-end 7-inch ECUMASTER dashboard is nestled in a rally-tower unit, giving the motorcycle a more luxurious feel of an adventure rally bike. The dash arrangement provides a premium feel and increased visibility of ride control, which is best for off-road rides and rally-style adventures.

Suspension and Ride Quality

Suspension responsibilities are taken care of by fully adjustable USD telescopic front forks and high-performance Öhlins rear mono-shock. The adjustable suspension arrangement shows Royal Enfield’s intent towards providing a smooth yet reliable off-road experience, appropriate for both recreational trail riders and serious adventure experts.

What’s Next?

While Royal Enfield has not announced a launch date yet, the latest round of testing clearly points towards a soon-to-happen release. With major improvements and with a specific emphasis on off-road riding, the Himalayan Electric may turn out to be a game-changer in the EV motorcycle segment when finally launched.
