August Rule Changes: A new month has started today, August 2026. Each month brings about various changes. As of today, some rules have also been updated. These changes will have a direct effect on the everyday person. It’s crucial to stay informed about these updates concerning essential services such as banking, investments, taxes, and railway ticket bookings. Sometimes, being unaware of even minor rule changes can lead to extra charges or complications in completing important tasks.
Starting today, the Railways has modified the Tatkal ticket booking process. The timing for token issuance is now synchronized with the start time for Tatkal ticket bookings. This adjustment aims to alleviate congestion at reservation counters and simplify the ticket booking experience for passengers. In the past, individuals had to visit the counters at different times to collect tokens before booking tickets. Tokens for AC Tatkal were available between 8:30-9:00 am, while non-AC Tatkal tokens were issued from 9:00-9:30 am. Only after obtaining these tokens could Tatkal tickets be booked at the counter.

Additionally, there will now be a penalty for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR). The deadline for taxpayers whose accounts were not audited has passed. Consequently, filing ITR-1 and ITR-2 forms will incur a penalty ranging from Rs 1,000 to ₹5,000. Delays in submitting returns may also lead to restrictions on certain tax regimes. However, the deadline for filing ITR-3 and ITR-4 for businesses and those without audits is August 31, 2026. For audited cases, ITR-3 and ITR-4 must be filed by October 31, 2026. The last date for belated returns is December 31, and for revised returns, it is March 31, 2027. The final date for submitting updated returns is March 31, 2031.

Commercial gas cylinders become cheaper
Oil companies release new LPG rates on the first of every month. Starting today, commercial gas cylinders have become cheaper by Rs 202. There has been no change in the price of domestic gas cylinders. A 19-kg commercial cylinder will now be available in Delhi for Rs 2,728. Previously, its price was Rs 2,930. The reduction in the price of commercial cylinders will greatly benefit restaurants, hotels, and tea stall owners who use commercial cylinders.

Central CKYC
Beginning on August 1st, the regulations concerning Aadhaar cards have been updated. By August 2026, Indian banks and insurance firms will adopt a unified customer identification system, which will also encompass asset managers. This innovative system is referred to as Central Know Your Customer 2.0, or CKYC. The primary benefit of this new approach is that you won’t have to provide separate KYC documents to every bank, insurance provider, or mutual fund.
