Train Travel Alert: Lakhs of people travel via Indian Railways daily, and the network operates a vast number of trains. These trains connect various cities, often covering long-distance routes. However, passengers sometimes face issues during their journey—such as the theft of a mobile phone, wallet, or other belongings—and often do not know the immediate course of action. In such situations, rather than wasting time, it is crucial to inform railway staff immediately. Here is what you should do in such an event.

What to do if belongings are stolen on the train?

According to railway guidelines, if theft, robbery, or dacoity occurs on a moving train, passengers can contact the TTE, coach attendant, guard, or the GRP/RPF personnel present on the train. The railways provide an FIR form for such cases.
Passengers can fill in the details of the incident on this form and submit it to the railway staff. The complaint is then forwarded to the police station for necessary action. Notably, the passenger does not need to interrupt their journey or visit a police station personally to file the FIR.

File a complaint via number 139.

In the event of a theft, passengers can contact the railway helpline at number 139. Additionally, complaints related to the train journey can be registered through the railways’ ‘Rail Madad’ system. When filing a complaint, passengers are required to provide details such as their mobile number, train number, PNR, passenger information, and other relevant complaint details, including the date of the incident.

What to do if a mobile phone is stolen?

If your mobile phone is stolen on the train, the first step is to have your SIM card deactivated; you should contact your mobile service provider for this purpose. Subsequently, if you need to log in to banking apps, UPI, or other essential accounts on the mobile, immediate steps must be taken to ensure their security. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) system for handling complaints regarding stolen mobile phones also includes a process to assist with filing an FIR and facilitating further action.
