Ahead of the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, Indian team bowling coach Morne Morkel has given a positive update on the fitness of injured batsmen Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer. Both players were out of the series due to their respective injuries, but they are recovering, which is a good sign for the team.

The first match of the three-match ODI series between India and South Africa will be played in Ranchi on Sunday. KL Rahul has been named the captain of the team for this series. Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the series due to a neck injury.

Injury updates of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer

Morkel gave positive updates on the return of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer from injury. He said, “I believe it’s best for the medical staff to provide updates on this, but I spoke to Shubman two days ago and he’s recovering well. I’m glad to hear that. Shreyas has also started rehabilitation, which is great. We look forward to welcoming him back into the team soon. The good thing is that he’s healthy and starting to prepare for his return to the team.” With senior players being rested, this series is a big opportunity for young fast bowlers like Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Prasidh Krishna.

Shreyas Iyer suffered a serious abdominal injury while fielding during the third ODI against Australia on October 25, bruising his spleen and causing internal bleeding. The injury was quickly identified and the bleeding was stopped immediately after a minor procedure. Iyer suffered the injury while fielding during the ODI series when he dived backwards to take a spectacular catch off Alex Carey. The injury resulted in a severe bruise below his left rib, causing internal bleeding and injury very close to vital organs.

Gill suffered neck spasms while batting in the first Test in Kolkata. He missed the Guwahati Test due to the injury. Gill is also unlikely to play in the upcoming T20 International series against South Africa, starting December 9th.
