A large number of farmers in the country rely on farming as their primary source of income. Many of these farmers are small and marginal, either cultivating very small plots of land or working as laborers on other people’s land. In such a situation, these families often face financial challenges. To support these farmers and stabilize their incomes, the central government is implementing the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana. Under this scheme, financial assistance of ₹6,000 per year is sent directly to the bank accounts of eligible farmers in three installments. So far, 21 installments have been released, and the 21st installment was also transferred to farmers’ accounts on November 19th.

What are the rules for those who cultivate on other people’s land?

After each installment is released, a recurring question among farmers is whether sharecroppers or those who work on other people’s land can also benefit from this scheme. The government’s rules are clear on this matter. If a farmer only cultivates on a sharecropping basis and does not own any agricultural land, he or she is not eligible for the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana (PMKSY). The entire process of this scheme is based on revenue records and land ownership. Many people assume that working on a farm or managing a farm entitles them to benefits, but the reality is different.

Land Ownership Determines Eligibility

To participate in the scheme, it is necessary that the land on which the farmer is farming is registered in government records. If a sharecropper owns even a small amount of land, he or she can receive the scheme’s benefits based on that. This means that benefits will only be available to farmers whose agricultural land is registered in their name. Those who do not own land are not eligible for this scheme.

Which Farmers Are Eligible?

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana is available to all farmers who own land and engage in agricultural work. This includes small farmers, marginal farmers, elderly farmers, and families whose income primarily depends on farming. Whether the land is large or small, ownership registration is mandatory. To receive benefits, the bank account must be linked to Aadhaar, e-KYC must be complete, and the land verification record must be updated. Farmers who own land but haven’t updated the records often face difficulties with the verification process.
