OG Tata Sierra
Launched in 1991, the original Tata Sierra was a powerful and excellent SUV. Back then, people needed a reliable vehicle that could handle any terrain, more than luxurious features. And the Sierra delivered just that. The most notable feature was that at that time, the Sierra only came with a diesel engine option. It started with a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated diesel engine producing 63 horsepower.

Tata later took a major step forward and introduced a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine with 91 horsepower. Both engines were four-cylinder engines and came paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. These engines may not seem very powerful today, but at the time, they proved to be extremely reliable and robust. These engines delivered tremendous torque at low revs, perfect for the roads of that era.
New Tata Sierra
Now let’s talk about the new Sierra. The Tata Sierra 2025 is a powerful combination of modern technology and excellent performance. It’s scheduled to officially launch on November 25, 2025, and marks a major change in Tata’s SUV lineup. Unlike the old Sierra, the new model will come with both petrol and diesel engine options. This is a significant upgrade to the Tata Sierra ICE version, as customers now have more powertrain options. This new Sierra is not only powerful but also perfectly suited for urban and highway driving.
New Sierra Petrol Engines
The new Tata Sierra’s petrol lineup is completely new and designed to suit every customer. If you’re looking for a smooth and quiet everyday driving experience, the 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine is the one for you. And if you’re a performance enthusiast and crave tremendous speed, the 1.5-liter turbo-petrol engine is also available. This new petrol engine in the Tata Sierra is expected to be more refined and fuel-efficient than the diesel-only setup in the previous OG Sierra. This means you’ll now get both power and improved fuel efficiency.
New Sierra Diesel Engines
The Tata Sierra is known for its diesel engine, and the new Sierra continues this legacy and makes it even more advanced. Diesel options on the 2025 Sierra will include a 1.5-liter diesel engine producing approximately 118 horsepower and 260 Newton meters of torque. This engine will offer an excellent balance of power and fuel economy. For those seeking more power, Tata is also offering a 2.0-liter Kryotec diesel engine producing 170 horsepower and 350 Newton meters of torque. Most importantly, both engines will come with both manual and automatic transmission options, something the old Sierra never had.

Old vs New Sierra
The question now arises as to what the main difference is between the engines of the two SUVs. The biggest difference lies in the range of engine options. The original Sierra only came with a diesel engine, with power ranging from 63 to 91 horsepower. The new Sierra offers both petrol and diesel engines, with power reaching 170 horsepower. This makes the 2025 model much more powerful, refined, and perfect for modern highway and city driving. While the old engine technology was simple and mechanical, the new engines use advanced turbocharging, better emission control, and a smoother gearbox.
