What will be the new option if FASTag payment fails?
Until now, only FASTag and cash payments have been available at toll plazas. However, paying tolls in cash was subject to double charges, resulting in losses for many vehicle owners. To address this issue, NHAI has introduced UPI-based payment as a third option. This means that if the FASTag scan fails, you can now pay tolls through the UPI app. This will not result in double toll charges, but only a 25 percent additional amount.
How much will be charged for UPI payments?
In simple terms, if the normal toll for a vehicle is ₹100, then FASTag will only deduct ₹100. If your FASTag fails, you will have to pay ₹125 if you pay using UPI. However, if you pay in cash, you will have to pay the full ₹200. The government believes this will reduce cash usage and promote digital payments.
Why were the rules changed?
The government is continuously emphasizing the adoption of digital transactions and cashless systems. According to statistics, 98 percent of toll payments in India are already made using FASTag. Despite this, some vehicles still make cash payments, which wastes time and resources at toll plazas. By adding the UPI payment option, the government aims to bring these vehicle owners to the digital system.
When will the new rules be implemented?
NHAI has clarified that these changes will be implemented across India from November 15, 2025. It has already been successfully tested at several toll plazas. In the coming months, UPI scanning and payment will be available at all toll booths across the country.
What are the important precautions for FASTag users?
If your FASTag has not been used for a long time or its KYC is incomplete, it should be updated immediately. NHAI has clarified that FASTag tags with incomplete KYC will be blocked. You can easily check your KYC and balance by visiting the MyFASTag app or your bank’s website.
What to do if you don’t have a FASTag?
If you haven’t already purchased a FASTag, you can purchase one immediately from an authorized bank, Paytm, PhonePe, or Amazon Pay platform. The FASTag is activated immediately after entering the vehicle number and OTP verification. Recharge can also be done in seconds.

NHAI gives important advice to travelers
NHAI has advised travelers to check their FASTag balance before traveling. Recharge only through the official app or bank website. Avoid falling victim to fraud by making payments through a fake website or an unknown app. If your FASTag repeatedly shows scan failed, it is best to replace it immediately.
