UIDAI makes MBU free for children
UIDAI has completely waived the fees for mandatory biometric updates for children between the ages of 5 and 15. While fingerprint, iris, and photo updates in Aadhaar typically require a fixed fee, no fees will be charged for children in these age groups. This step is aimed at ensuring accurate Aadhaar information for children and eliminating the risk of future service denials.
UIDAI’s Partnership with BIT
UIDAI has also announced that it will collaborate with Behavioral Insights Limited (BIT) to launch a campaign to increase awareness about Mandatory Biometric Updates and encourage people to update them timely manner. The collaboration aims to understand why people don’t update their biometrics on time and to address the behavioral, awareness, and technical barriers that delay the process. This initiative will enable children and youth to easily access Aadhaar-based services and schemes.
Why MBU is Mandatory
Children’s biometric identity is not fully developed at the time of Aadhaar enrollment. Therefore, UIDAI has mandated two biometric updates at the ages of 5 and 15. Fingerprints, eye scans, and facial photos are stable and accurate at these ages, strengthening Aadhaar data and reducing identification errors.
When will the waiver be effective?
According to UIDAI, this fee waiver has been implemented from October 1, 2025, and will continue for a period of one year, i.e., until September 30, 2026. It is estimated that approximately 60 million children will directly benefit from this initiative. This facility will be available at Aadhaar Seva Kendras across the country.

Who benefits from the free biometric update?
It is important to note that this waiver is only applicable to children between the ages of 5 and 15. Citizens of other age groups will have to pay a pre-determined fee when making biometric or demographic updates. UIDAI aims to make children’s identification more accurate so that they do not face any difficulties in future benefits or verification processes.
