What is ODI Super League?
This tournament was played only once after the 2019 ODI World Cup and served as a qualifier for the 2023 ODI World Cup. The 13-team league began in July 2020. The 13 teams included 12 full members and the Netherlands. Each team played against eight of the 12 opponents, spanning eight series: four at home and four away.
Each series consisted of three ODI matches. The top seven teams in the league qualified directly for the 2023 ODI World Cup, while the bottom five advanced to the second stage of the qualifiers.
ODI Super League to make a return?
The ODI Super League was discontinued after the 2023 ODI World Cup. An ICC meeting hinted at its return. It is believed it could be revived after the 2027 ODI World Cup. The return of the Super League, which was discontinued due to the busy cricket calendar, will enhance the importance of bilateral series. However, no decision has been made yet on how many teams will participate.
What is the latest updates?
The ICC meeting decided that a total of 12 teams will participate in the World Test Championship from next season, as several countries have opposed the two-tier plan. No official announcement has been made yet.
