Indian Railways provides affordable and comfortable travel to millions of passengers every day, but confusion often surrounds child ticketing. Which children can travel free in all classes, from Sleeper to First AC, and which age groups are required to purchase a full ticket? Learn the rules of the Indian Railways’ child ticket policy in detail to ensure a smooth and economical journey.
Indian Railways Child Ticket Policy
It is crucial to understand the Indian Railways’ child ticket policy to avoid any inconvenience during travel. The Railways has defined three main categories based on the age of the child, for which different rules apply.

Special Provisions for Children Under 5
According to an extraordinary circular issued by the Ministry of Railways on March 6, 2020, children under five years of age can travel free. No ticket purchase is required. To avail this provision, no separate berth or seat (in chair cars) will be provided for the child. The child must travel on the berth of the parent or accompanying adult. However, if the parent voluntarily requests a separate berth or seat for a child under five years of age, they must pay the full adult fare.
For Children 5 to 12 Years
Indian Railways offers a flexible option for children over five but under 12 years of age. If the parent does not claim a separate berth or seat for the child, the child is allowed to travel free without a ticket. If you require a separate berth or seat for the child’s convenience, you must pay the full adult fare. You must select this option when booking the ticket.
Rules for Children 12 Years and Above

According to railway rules, all children aged 12 years and above must pay the full adult fare. They must purchase a full ticket for travel and will be provided with a separate berth or seat.
Things to keep in mind when booking tickets
When booking tickets online or at the counter, it’s crucial to enter the correct number and age of children. If you don’t want a separate berth for a child under 5 years of age, carefully select the “No berth required” option when booking. If you are traveling without a ticket with a child under 5 years of age, and the checking staff suspect you were fraudulently trying to secure a berth for the child, a violation could result in a fine. Therefore, choosing the correct option based on the correct age of the children is paramount. This simple policy ensures that train travel remains accessible and equitable for all.
