While riding a scooter, have you ever felt that you need a little more power to overtake? In a bike, you can just downshift and move ahead, but this is not possible in a scooter because it has a CVT gearbox which adjusts the gear ratio accordingly. Now Yamaha has found a solution to this problem. In its new 2026 Yamaha NMax 155 Tech Max, the company has brought a downshift button, which gives an instant torque boost just like on a bike. Let us know how this new technology will change the entire scooter riding experience.

Technology

The biggest update the company has given in the new Yamaha NMax 155 Tech Max (MY26) is its new YECVT gearbox. In simple terms, this is an advanced electronic version of CVT. This gearbox has downshift toggle button which is present on the left switchgear. As the rider presses this button, the engine immediately starts giving extra torque — as if gears have been down in a conventional bike.

The purpose of this system is to make the riding experience more engaging and sporty. Yamaha says that this feature will make scooter riders also feel gear shifting thrill, without the complexity of the manual gearbox.

Ride Modes

Yamaha has also provided two ride modes, Town Mode and Sport Mode, with the YECVT system. When the rider presses the downshift toggle, the bike moves to Sport Mode, where the engine runs on high revs and the transmission responds faster. This mode is perfect for overtaking or fast riding.

At the same time, the engine in the Town Mode stays on the low-raves, making the fuel efficiency better and the ride smooth. This mode is ideal for city traffic or comfortable riding. The feature of this feature is that the rider can control the behavior of the scooter according to his mood and road condition, exactly as seen in sports bikes.

Design

Yamaha has not made much changes to the design of NMax 155 Tech Max. It still has 4.2-inch TFT display, dual disc brakes and the same 155cc liquid-cooled 4V engine as seen in Aerox 155.

The engine is already strong, and with the YECVT system, its performance has now become even better. Apart from this, the company has also paid attention to riding comfort, which will reduce fatigue even in long rides.

Launch

Yamaha showcased NMax 155 in India in February 2024 and also released the teaser in September 2024. It is now expected that it can be officially launched at the Yamaha event of 11 November 2025.

However, it is not necessary that the version coming to India comes with the YECVT system. The company can launch its standard version first and later introduce the YECVT version. But if this feature comes in the Indian market, it will prove to be a large technological leap in the scooter segment.
