UIDAI Tightens Rules: You Get Only One Chance to Correct Aadhaar Card Details, Update Carefully

The Aadhaar Card is the most important government document for identification and address in India today. Aadhaar is mandatory for everything from availing government schemes to opening a bank account. However, even a small mistake in Aadhaar can land you in serious trouble in the future.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has now further tightened the rules for updating certain important information in the Aadhaar card. UIDAI has clarified that information such as name, date of birth, and gender can now be corrected only once. Therefore, you must understand these new and strict rules before updating your Aadhaar.

Only One Correction Permitted

UIDAI has taken this important decision to maintain the credibility of the Aadhaar database. Repeated changes to certain basic information will no longer be permitted.

Name Correction

People often make mistakes in the spelling of their name or title, but now corrections to their name will only be allowed once. If you have successfully updated your name the first time, UIDAI will not accept your request to change the same name a second time. Therefore, it is mandatory to enter the correct name using valid documents (such as a passport, PAN card) the first time.

Change of Date of Birth

UIDAI has also established strict rules for correcting the date of birth. Changes to the date of birth are allowed only once. Incorrect dates of birth often result in rejection of applications for government schemes or pensions. Therefore, it is wise to update the correct date the first time using valid documents such as a school certificate or birth certificate.

Change of Gender

Changing gender is also allowed only once. This change will also require valid documents or a self-declaration. Therefore, all important information, such as name, date of birth, and gender, must be entered correctly the first time you update your Aadhaar card, so you don’t have to reapply in the future.

Which information can be updated repeatedly

The good news is that UIDAI has given you complete flexibility to update certain information repeatedly. This information may change depending on your life circumstances.

Address Change

If you frequently move house, you may be able to change your address multiple times. However, you will need to upload proof-of-address documents each time.

Mobile Number and Email ID

You can also update your mobile number and email ID easily and multiple times through the online portal.

Providing incorrect information while updating your Aadhaar card may not only result in your request being rejected but may also cause serious problems in matching your documents in the future. Therefore, before updating, check all your information carefully, not once but twice, so that you do not face any inconvenience later.
