Recently, the government has reduced GST on many goods, after which the rumour spread that the prices of milk would come down. But are Amul and Mother Dairy milk really going to become cheaper? Know the whole truth of this news and what UHT milk is, whose price is going to come down.
The government has recently changed the GST rates on about 400 goods, which also includes milk. After this change, many customers were under the impression that the prices of packaged milk would come down from September 22. There was also news in the media that companies like Amul and Mother Dairy can cut the price of milk by up to ₹ 4. But Amul has completely rejected these claims.

Amul’s clarification
Jayan Mehta, Managing Director of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), Amul’s parent company, clarified that GST on fresh packaged milk was always 0%, so there will be no change in its prices. He said that the government has reduced GST from 5% to 0% only on UHT (ultra-high temperature) milk. This means that from September 22, only UHT milk will be cheaper, while normal packaged milk will be available at the same price.
What is UHT milk, and why will it be cheaper?
UHT means ultra-high temperature milk. This milk is heated at 135°C for a few seconds, which kills all the harmful bacteria present in it. After this, it is filled in an airtight package like a Tetra pack. Due to this process, this milk remains safe for many months even without a refrigerator. This GST reduction has been applied to similar packaged milk, which will reduce its prices.

Current milk prices
Currently, Amul Gold (full cream milk) is available at ₹69 per liter and Amul toned milk at ₹57 per liter. Similarly, Mother Dairy’s full cream milk is also being sold at ₹ 69 and toned milk at ₹ 57 per liter. Apart from these, buffalo milk is being sold at ₹ 75 and cow milk at ₹ 58 per liter. There will be no change in the prices of these fresh packaged milk. Only the prices of UHT milk will decrease, the demand for which is limited.
